L1A VISA
The L-1A nonimmigrant classification enables a U.S. employer to transfer an executive or manager from one of its affiliated foreign offices to one of its offices in the United States. This classification also enables a foreign company that does not yet have an affiliated U.S. office to send an executive or manager to the United States with the purpose of establishing one.
L1B VISA
The L-1B nonimmigrant classification enables a U.S. employer to transfer a professional employee with specialized knowledge relating to the organization’s interests from one of its affiliated foreign offices to one of its offices in the United States. This classification also enables a foreign company that does not yet have an affiliated U.S. office to send a specialized knowledge employee to the United States to help establish one.
The L-1 visa is designed for intracompany transferees, allowing multinational companies to transfer managers, executives (L-1A), or employees with specialized knowledge (L-1B) from a foreign office to a U.S. office.
Initially, L-1 visas are granted for up to three years for new offices and one year for existing offices. Extensions are possible, with a maximum stay of seven years for L-1A visa holders and five years for L-1B visa holders.
Yes, L-1 visa holders are allowed to pursue lawful permanent residency (green card) in the U.S. through employment-based immigration processes. The L-1 visa program has a dual intent provision, enabling individuals to seek permanent residency while holding L-1 status.
Yes, eligible family members, including spouses and unmarried children under the age of 21, can accompany L-1 visa holders to the U.S. on L-2 visas. They may also apply for work authorization in the U.S.
